How to Build a Deck Privacy Screen
1. Build the Privacy Screen Frame
Start by creating a frame to set the privacy screen. We are using 6×6 support posts with a 4×6 top cap. Notice the 2×2 material that is nailed to the inside of the supports. This will hold the slats.
2. Nail in the Slat Boards
Nail the 1×4 slat boards to the outside of the 2×2 nailer board. Make sure the openings are evenly spaced.
3. Use Spacer Blocks
Use scrap 2×2 material as spacer blocks to keep the privacy slat boards even from the top of the wall to the bottom.
4. Add the Horizontal Slats
Use finish nails to attach the horizontal slats to the vertical slats. Make sure each piece is level.
5. Use a Level
Repeat the process to finish the privacy screen wall. You can adjust the spacing for more or less privacy and light. Make sure the openings are consistent and the lines are straight.
6. Paint the Wall
Use paint to add some color and make the wall match the rails and the posts. Mix that in with a natural brown wood floor and you have a classic look.

A privacy wall may not always be the best solution for every homeowner. Perhaps there are HOA restrictions against privacy screens of a certain height. Or, the expense and maintenance of installing a privacy screen might not feel like a worthwhile investment to you. Whatever your reasons, there are other simple solutions that can increase your privacy and enhance the aesthetics of your deck.
Plant Trees
Adding trees around your deck can not only offer shade from direct sunlight but can also be a great way to add privacy. Trees are an attractive way to afford privacy while enjoying your deck.
However, keep in mind that during the autumn months, you may need to frequently sweep away fallen leaves from your desk so they don’t pose a slip-and-fall hazard. While you may still be able to enjoy your deck during brisk months, trees without a full blanket of foliage may not offer as much privacy as they would during periods when they’re in full bloom.
